Donald Trump promised to end government censorship and protect free speech. Americans believed those promises. But he’s done the opposite on both fronts. Trump has instructed federal prosecutors to investigate and indict his political opponents. Trump has publicly threatened to jail Democratic governors Gavin Newsom and J.B. Pritzker. ICE has detained international students for writing op-eds critical of Trump’s policies. Trump has sued CBS, ABC, The Wall Street Journal, and The New York Times for coverage he doesn’t like. He’s targeted universities and law firms that won’t fold to his demands. And his administration is using strong-arm tactics to pressure networks into pulling comedians like Jimmy Kimmel off the air. This is exactly the kind of assault on free speech that Trump promised to stop. He said he would protect Americans’ freedoms. He lied.
